The Story of HisGoldenEyes.com – Kimmy West (Founder)

How We Got Started

I bought Twilight back in 2007, when I was 15 years old, and in my freshman year of high school. I had a gift card to my local bookstore that was long overdue to be used, I had gotten it for my birthday which was in June, and it needed to be spent! So I headed on over to the store, and looked through all the books. I picked up a few, not sure which to buy, and then I saw the dark cover that is now so famous. Back then I had never heard of the books, nobody had. I just checked it out, (honestly just thought the jacket looked pretty) and bought it. Nobody had recommended the book to me, it was just a random decision. It sat on my shelf for a while, and I picked it up in December to read it. I’m a pretty fast reader, and when I like a book, I read it fast. When I was finished, I went online and checked out some of the other websites out there for the series. I wanted to talk about it with someone! Back then I was quite an online geek, and enjoyed playing around with my MySpace profile (come on guys, it was 2007!), and going on Neopets. Both of these taught me some very basic HTML coding, which is what you use to create websites. Yup, I started HisGoldenEyes with nothing but Neopets and MySpace knowledge! In the past I had made very basic websites for my own enjoyment, and I decided that Twilight was a perfect subject for one as well. Honestly, I never thought the site would get big. I just liked to make websites for fun, and I had seen that there were a few other sites online, and never imagined it would rise to the same level as them. I made it originally on the free website creator ‘Freewebs.com,’ and the site was originally found at ‘Freewebs.com/GoldenEyes.’ It was mainly a forum, where I could discuss the series with other fans. Back then, it was only a fansite for the books, there had been no casting or any information on the movie. It was just optioned like so many other books are today. After the site grew, and movie news was a little more frequent, the traffic rose drastically. I remember it was a little bit before Kristen Stewart was cast as Bella when we got our domain name. I wanted GoldenEyes.com, so the site could be named for ALL the Cullens, not just Edward, but of course it was taken. So we got HisGoldenEyes.com, and the rest is history!

Since We Started…

Since we started, life has been crazy! It may sound corny, but running HisGoldenEyes.com changed my life in many great ways. When the movie was in full force, we were getting so much traffic, that we were put on an email list that Summit Entertainment (the company creating the movie) uses to contact the online fan websites. Eventually this led to us being invited to the ‘Twilight’ premiere in Los Angeles, where I truly realized how huge this was. I was a very shy person back then, but when you really like something, you will forget about your fears and just do it. So, the movie premiere knocked me into perspective and made me realize how huge it truly was. You have to remember though, I started this site as a hobby, and now I was standing at a star-studded film premiere, and I was overwhelmed! When I returned, we posted our premiere footage on YouTube to a giant reaction, which blew our traffic up even higher. Since then, we have visited the set of ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon,’ and I went to ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ premiere as a co-host for MTV this past summer. Now, I’m 18 years old, and I feel like it has changed me as a person. Before the website, I was shy, and now I have traveled to ‘Twilight’ conventions to speak to crowds, and gone to premieres and interviewed famous actors. Before, I wanted to grow up to be a nurse. Now, I want to break into the film industry and work in marketing. I have opened up a company that will start following book-to-movie adaptations, called ‘Page to Premiere‘ that has network sites about other upcoming YA adaptations, including ‘The Hunger Games’ (www.mockingjay.net).
