Lionsgate close to completing deal to purchase Summit Entertainment

Posted on Jan 08, 2012 by Amy with No Comments.

Will one entity soon be the producers behind two of the biggest young adult book to film franchises?

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. could soon corner the market on young adult franchises.  According to Bloomberg the studio producing the upcoming “The Hunger Games” film is close to completing a deal to purchase Summit Entertainment, the studio behind our beloved “Twilight Saga,” for $700 million.

The Bloomberg article indicates that Summit has been negotiating exclusively with Lions Gate for the last week and an announcement of the deal could come as soon as next week.  As part of the deal, Lions Gate will pay more than $400 million for Summit’s equity and assume less than $300 million in debt.

Merger talks between Lions Gate and Summit go back to 2008 and resurfaced in late 2011, but seemed to fall apart before the holidays. As late as yesterday the New York Post reported that a deal could not be reached, but all indications today is that talks are back on and that the studios are close to a deal.

In addition to “The Hunger Games,” Lionsgate is also the studio behind “Abduction,” “Monster’s Ball,” the “Saw” franchise, “Kick Ass,” “The Expendables” and the upcoming “The Expendables 2″ and  ”What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” On the television side Lionsgate produces “Mad Men,” “Weeds” and “Nurse Jackie.”  Lionsgate stands to gain the lucrative “Twilight” franchise as well as adding Summit’s Oscar-winning war drama “The Hurt Locker” to its library of 13,000 films and TV shows.

For Sale: The Twilight Bus for $20,000

Posted on Jan 07, 2012 by Amy with 5 Comments.

It’s too late to be a Christmas present, but The Twilight Bus, seen at several Twilight Conventions and other Twilight events in the Sacramento, Calif. area, can be yours to take to Breaking Dawn, Part 1 midnight DVD release party or the Part 2 premiere. Yes, The Twilight Bus is for sale.

The former school bus was purchased on craigslist for $1500 by the Silva family to replace their 15 passenger van. They needed something roomier to transport their 10 children including several kids with special needs. The bus needed to be repainted and it was the kids who decided to go with a Twilight theme.  Local businesses worked with the family to get the bus painted and the vinyl decal images placed on the vehicle.

The vehicle can seat 19 and is a mobile museum dedicated to the Twilight Saga.  It has been signed multiple times by Peter Facinelli, Daniel Cudmore, Jodelle Ferland, Kiowa Gordon, Booboo Stewart, Alex Meraz, Chaske Spencer, Gil Birmingham and Tinsel Korey. It has   merchandise and pictures lining the walls and ceiling inside.  The exterior includes the Cullen’s in the windows on the one side and the book covers on the other. The side of the vehicle features promotional images from New Moon and Twilight and Edward Cullen is on the hood.

The sale of the vehicle includes all the memorabilia and autographed items, several boxes of merchandise and thetwilightbus.com domain and twitter account.

The Twilight Bus is listed on craigslist here for $20,000, but it also says she is “interested in trades for a newer van/minivan/truck.”

If you want a more in depth look at The Twilight Bus, check out Lori and Laura from Twilight Lexicon‘s video tour of the bus from 2010 and Laura’s return to the bus last summer below.

Summit announces ‘Breaking Dawn, Part 1′ midnight release parties and special features as DVD pre-sales begin

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by Amy with 9 Comments.

Summit Entertainment announced that retailers around the country will be holding pre-release parties on the evening of Friday, February 10 in anticipation of the release of the two-disc Special Edition DVD and one-disc Special Edition Blu-ray of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 at midnight on Saturday, February 11.  Look for details on particpating stores coming soon to http://www.breakingdawn-themovie.com/. Pre-sales of the DVD and Blu-ray officially started today, January 3, and retailers including Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon are now taking orders.

The Special Features include a six-part “making-of” documentary, Edward and Bella wedding video,  two fast forward features that will take you to “your favorite” Edward and Jacob scenes, and audio commentary by director Bill Condon. No deleted/extended scenes or cast member audio commentary is listed to the dismay of fans who were hoping for additional wedding or honeymoon footage and more quips from Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

While the Special Features appear to be the same on every DVD and Blu-ray, some retailers are offering special packaging to entice fans.

Target's unique limited edition case includes an authentic prop flowers from the movie set encased in a collectible keepsake featuring a wedding portrait of Edward and Bella (DVD $34.99, Blu-ray $37.99).

Walmart is calling their version the Bella's Wedding Dress edition and includes a fabric poster featuring Bella and Edward at the wedding, music videos, and the opportunity to enter to win a trip to the 'Part 2' L.A. premiere and other prizes. (DVD $22.96, Blu-ray $26.96 online)

Will you pre-order online or will you wait to see if your local retailer will be hosting event? I’m waiting to see if any other stores offer different packaging, and for more information on the midnight release parties, including whether or not any cast members will be making appearances as they did for New Moon’s midnight DVD release.

Twilight: The Musical, a parody, will be presented as a benefit concert reading in a one-night only performance at the New York City Off-Broadway venue New World Stages on Monday, January 16 at 8 PM.

According to the show’s website: Twilight: The Musical is a parody of theTwilight saga in the vein of Urinetown and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Twilight: The Musical examines our culture of obsession through the story of teenage outsider Bella Swan who risks everything when she embarks on a star-crossed romance with Vampire Edward Cullen.

With a song titled “I Imprinted on an Infant” it seems that this 2 hour and 15 minute musical may cover the entire Twilight Saga. Other songs include “Life Sucks When Your Boyfriend is a Vampire” and “Death Never Sounded So Good.”

The concert is directed by Off-Broadway director Gabriel Barre and features a cast of Broadway performers. Tickets are $51.50 for general tickets and $76.50 for premium tickets and available at Telecharge.

This performance benefits Blessings in a Backpack, a non-profit organization that provides elementary schoolchildren who are on federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year. The program is currently feeding more than 55,000 children in 318 schools in Canada, Columbia, Haiti and 37 U.S. states.

The evening is being presented by Liz Ulmer, Moxyrah Productions, and Dreamcatcher Entertainment. Their goal is to raise $5,000.  If you can’t attend, but would like to make a donation visit: http://www.indiegogo.com/Twilight-The-Musical.  There are a variety of pledge levels from $15 Human contribution, which includes a personal thank you from a member of the production team, all the way up to the $5,000 Volturi level that includes a variety perks including an autographed guitar and “In Association with” credit on the concert.  For a $100 Forks High Senior donation one of the perks is a “highlight” demo CD of songs from the show.

Will you be attending Twilight: The Musical? What do you think about a full length stage production of a Twilight parody?
