Mavis (Charlize Theron) yells at her ex-boyfriend's wife, Beth Slade (Elizabeth Reaser) in 'Young Adult.'
The dark comedy, ‘Young Adult,’ featuring Elizabeth Reaser, opens in theaters across the country today.
Academy Award winner Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a ghost writer for a teen literature series who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart, Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.
Elizabeth Reaser plays Buddy Slade’s wife, Beth. Beth is a new mom, who when not working with special needs children during the day, is the drummer in an all-mom band called Nipple Confusion. Beth is warm and friendly and seems to welcome Mavis, her husband’s ex girlfriend, into their lives and home.
‘Young Adult’ is written by Diablo Cody, the Academy Award winning screenwriter of ‘Juno,’ and directed by the Academy Award nominated director of ‘Juno’ and ‘Up in the Air,’ Jason Reitman.
I recently had a chance to speak with Diablo Cody after a screening of ‘Young Adult’ in Los Angeles. I asked Diablo if Beth is really that nice or if she was just keeping her enemies close. Diablo’s response was that “she really is that nice.”
‘Young Adult,’ already is receiving accolades and award recognition including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Charlize Theron.
