Kimmy’s ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1′ Review

EDIT: I saw the movie at the world premiere…and I take it back about it being too drawn out! It was so much better the second time, and I think I only felt like it was too long because I was waiting on every word…in anticipation! :)

————————————–

It is time for my Breaking Dawn – Part 1 review! Fans always rightly dismiss movie reviews from major media regarding the ‘Twilight’ saga since the movies aren’t for people who don’t ‘get,’ Twilight. They are for the fans. I believe fans of the books will love ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1.’ This movie has major scene after major scene that keep the suspense going: the wedding, the honeymoon swim in the ocean, the sex scene, imprinting, the birth, and Bella’s vampire transformation.

First of all, the wedding is beautiful. Kristen Stewart owns this movie, and in this scene she really makes the audience know Bella’s thought process just from the expression on her face. She is nervous, obviously, and doesn’t know if she is doing the right thing because of her whole experience with her mother also marrying young and eventually leaving her father. However, she sees Edward at the end of the aisle, and Robert Pattinson’s look of pure joy and “I love you, I’ve been waiting so long for this,” is just perfect. Bella’s worries melt away and it is perfectly romantic, you will all love it! I also enjoyed all the little touches they included in the wedding; there are funny pieces that will make you all laugh. However, thought that the wedding was noticeably drawn out. There were many scenes that could have been cut down to make it flow a little bit better.

Second, the honeymoon is a major portion of the film. Fans will get what they are all so eager to see: kissing, romantic time in the ocean, adorable moments, and hilarious parts that I won’t spoil for you but will leave the theater laughing. The honeymoon scenes are where the mainstream media will begin to criticize, “Do we really need this much time in bed?” Fans will answer with a resounding ‘Yes!” At points I also believed that it could have been cut down, but I think that just comes with the territory of splitting this novel in half. For the filmmakers, it is much more freeing to have extra time to expand, rather than have to cut a lot out and disappoint the fans. Robert Pattinson also seems to have let his quirky personality shine through, which I really enjoyed. It was great to see a less sullen Edward. My favorite scenes during the honeymoon were the hilarious little touches added after their sex scene, when Edward has refused to touch her since he saw that he hurt her the first time. Let me just say, Bella is very persuasive.

One spot where the movie stumbles a bit was when they had to show the wolves mind reading, and ‘talking’ using their thoughts. It was done in a way that is to-be-expected, and makes the most sense, but it was hard to understand and confused the audience a little bit.

Moving on to the pregnancy, I believe it was handled well. You really believe her dedication to keeping the baby, and she just seems so fragile. The effects used to make Kristen look emaciated are absolutely phenomenal, and shocking. They looked real! I really do not want to spoil Jacob imprinting, I’ll just say it was handled very well, and does not come off as creepy!

The last 30 minutes of the movie which include the birth & Bella’s transformation is the best part, in my opinion. It’s very suspenseful, and the birth works well shooting from Bella’s perspective. Fans will know exactly what is going on without seeing too much blood and guts. When Edward thinks he has lost Bella after the birth, you really believe his desperation and heart-break. All I’ll say regarding Bella’s transformation: Kristen makes an absolutely gorgeous vampire!

To close, I thought the movie will really make fans of the books happy, while it will not appeal to the general mass media. Andrew Sims of Hypable and I were chatting after the screening and thought that the movie could have been stronger and dragged less if it had been 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, rather than just under 2 hours. That was the main issue for me, it just felt a tiny bit too long. I think that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is my favorite movie of the series right now, but I think Breaking Dawn – Part 2 has the potential to take over that spot. I can’t wait to see vampire Bella and Renesmee! Lastly, don’t forget to stay after the credits of the movie for a scene introducing you to Part 2.

Great ! It being 15 minutes too long is ok with me. I don’t really care what movie critics say when it comes to this series I don’t know why but I feel that they will always compare it to Potter and I don’t know why ? I do believe this splitting was a cash cow but WHY WOULD THAT HURT ? It’s bringing money into the movie industry and gives fans something to look forward too. I don’t like having to wait 1 year is the only problem.
    Thanks for the review !

  2. Sia says:

Oh yea Part 2 should be good !

  3. Kass says:

Glad you get us Kimmy ! And what pisses me off it will get compared to Hunger Games and Potter. boo !

  4. Taylorrrrr says:

It sort of worries me that you say it wasn’t your favorite, and that Eclipse is.
Eclipse was good, but I feel like the movies should be getting better, not as good…

    Now I’m worried :/.

  5. Erin says:

Your review has me super excited!!! I always thought that a good ending to the movie would be Bella opening her eyes, so we see the bright red newborn eyes and then it cuts to credits. But since you said that Kristen makes a gorgeous vampire, I guess we get to fully see her. That’s okay though!! Can’t wait :)

  6. Rachel says:

Thank you for such an honest and wonderful review! I try not to read the critic’s reviews, since they always butcher the films… Thanks again :)

  7. Sarah says:

I thought they might split the movies as Bella is “dying”, and the second would start with her feeling the pain of becoming a newborn, so I’m pretty excited about being able to see Bella as a vampire!
I’m always worried that I’ll be able to see all my favorite parts from the books in the movies; but I think Summit has done a great job so far. I just keep reminding myself to trust Melissa Rosenburg and all the producers…including Stephenie this time!
Thanks for the detailed yet elusive review, Kimmy!

  8. Sweetmaxcynthia says:

    Leaping lizards I cannot wait!

Hmmm if it’s not better than eclipse I’m worried too. Nonetheless, I still can’t wait!

  9. Brianne says:

I’m a little worried now. I know that the movie is going to be good and I’m excited…but when a brand new movie comes out it should be better than the others.

Eclipse was a good movie, but I want Breaking Dawn Part 1 to be better! Ugh. I hope they didn’t ruin it. I’d hate to wait another whole year to finally get the good movie that I wished for.

  10. rebecca says:

Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter panned BD1. The interesting thing is that both gave really favorable reviews to Eclipse, so they aren’t biased against Twilight. The movie feels long, has poor pacing and the limited action scenes are directed horribly by Condon. I thought he was a strange choice and it looks like it was a bad choice. Too bad Slade couldn’t have finished off the series on a high note, since he did so well with Eclipse.

  11. mina says:

how did you already see the movie?? and if you didn’t how did you find out what happens? whats ur secret? did you somehow see the movie online? where?

  12. Lisa says:

Thank you so much for the review! I’m glad to hear about the positives. I really hate going into movies with what film critics say in my mind. They never reflect my views and just, in general, drive me insane. I’m really looking forward to this movie – it seems great even with the negative bits you mentioned!

Mina, if you check out “Site Info” you’ll see that Kimmy is the luckiest girl in the whole world and gets to attend these special special events ;) So I’m guessing she was invited to an advance screening of some sort haha.

  13. Kelli says:

Kimmy do we see Renesmee in part 1???

  14. Lindsay says:

Thx for the review, I was thinking that part 1 would stop after the birth, so the viewers (who haven’t read the books) would not know for sure bella survives or not. But I think I like both ways … I will know in 3 days :)

  15. Jennifer says:

I usually don’t read reviews because I think others peoples opinions go way to far, but this one was great! She put her opinions, but didn’t over enphasize on them. I so can’t wait for the movie next week. Already have my ticket :)

  16. HGR says:

Not worried about Eclipse still being the favorite because it’s my favorite book. I can’t wait for the movie I think it’ll be amazing! Thanks Kimmy you rock.

  17. Lindsay says:

Kimmy, where does the movie end? I’m wondering, because I always thought it would be after the birth, BEFORE bella is completly changed. But that was a wrong assumption :)

  18. marion says:

can’t wait to see the movie. It comes out november 16th in France. God can’t wait. And can’t waitto see pictures of the premiere.
    THANKS

  19. Erin says:

I saw the movie at the world premiere, I agree with most everything Kimmy says, except that it was to long. I thought it was too short! lol…. I wouldn’t compare it to Eclipse, I thought it was much much better than Eclipse to be honest. I will agree with her, the effects were amazing and the ending was also the best part for me. The only part that I wasn’t sure I liked was also the wolves discussion, I tried to think of a better way to handle that scene and couldn’t either so I think that was the best they could do with that.

  20. Robyn says:

I have to also disagree with Kimmy, I would have LOVED another half hour of the movie to enjoy. Definitely not too long and drawn out! Also, a hundred times better than Eclipse, and up until now Eclipse has been my favorite. A brilliant movie in my opinion. One point I will agree with – yes, the wolves’ thoughts stood out as a scene that somehow could have been handled better. It was almost embarrassing. All in all, a fantastic effort!
