Vanity Fair: New Robert Pattinson Cover & Interview
Posted on Mar 01, 2011 by Nim with 37 Comments.

“There’s nothing you can do about it. That’s the way it is,” Pattinson tells Sales of the Twilight mega-fame that has changed his life. “But it is weird being part of that, kind of representing something you don’t particularly like … God. I just really headbutted it.” Though Sales conducted the interview while Pattinson was filming the fourth and fifth installments in the series, he admits that he still has trouble grappling with the implications of being so famous. “This thing with everyone knowing you … it’s weird, because people have this one-sided relationship where they look at your picture and feel they know you more than someone they actually know,” Pattinson says. “I don’t really know myself that well.”
“I can’t really understand it even now,” Pattinson says of Twilight’s appeal to legions of fans. “It does have an angle which is attached to something quite primal in girls. I guess people want it to define them, like ‘I’m a Twilight fan.’… I think people really just like being part of a crowd. There’s something just tremendously exciting about hyping yourself up to that level.”
The April issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and L.A. on Thursday, March 3, and nationally and on the iPad on Tuesday, March 8.

Yes I am a TWilight fan and love it ! Great cover !
Is he saying that he doesn’t like Twilight? I’m a little confused here.
yeah i got a little confused here tooo…..
maybe hes saying what hes representing that he doesnt like is the fame?
Wow! I guess it’s good he’s being honest but for him to be apart of something for so long that he doesn’t “particularly like” I think I lost a little bit of respect for him. I mean isn’t he always going off about how he only takes on projects he cares about and feels for. I guess I just assumed he meant good feelings. Apparently not.
i can read gator eye that he got drug to stay sleeply so he wont bite rob’s head or hand off. but it still so sexy on him sweet!
Maybe instead of being apart of the Twilight saga that he doesn’t like, he’s talking about being apart of “the top list” of people who everyone wants. I mean, he said he doesn’t really like all the fame he’s getting. Quote, “But it is weird being part of that, kind of representing something you don’t particularly like …”, maybe he’s “respresenting” that one major star who has millions of girls screaming after him. He disliked those people… and now he’s one of them, with millions of people who know every thing about him.
He’s hot, but I don’t very much like the gator part of the picture
thats got to be the hottest Omish looking Rob ever haha, very sexy to see a husband like that coming home after a big catch for dinner. lol hhmmmm yummm lol
I agree with Ana. That was exactly what I was interpreting from his interview, that it’s the extreme FAME that he doesn’t particularly like. Not Twilight in itself, just what it’s made him to the outside world. And I think it makes sense because I know without a doubt that if I had that kind of fame, I’d probably end up running over the paparazzi with my car. People call him and Kristen ungrateful all the time because of statements like this, but I don’t know if they always consider the fact that it’s got to be so annoying to go from no one knowing you to everyone being in your face all the time. Anyway, semi-rant over, haha.
He looks good, as always. But the crocodile thing is a little awkward, haha. I wonder why they decided to use it in the photos.
Hot Dayum, that man look smexy.
The gator is suppose to represent his new film Water for Elephants so i guess it goes. but he kinda looks like freddie higmore. Cute!
He meant its weird that he’s a part of something that a lot people dont like. He’s not talking about himself not liking Twilight, just that so many people hating on the series makes it weird since he’s the main part of that series.
No more hating on Rob, ok? please? Thank you
I don’t know. He’s has mentioned multiple times in the past his dislike for Twilight in general. Heck, the only reason why he even considered the project in the first place was because of Kristen Stewart.
bahahahahahah this picture’s kinda funneh xD lol
I think his statement about being a part of something he doesn’t like is completely about twilight. I completely agree with Mickayla because he’s has said so himself that he din’t want to be a part of it in the beginning but after finding out that Catherine and mainly Kristen was involved in it he decided to audition.
Personally I don’t blame him, he really doesn’t seem to put much effort into the movies anyway, he’s not crazy about Twilight and I really never expected him to be.
I love Robert, but he’s a much better actor than in the Twilight films and i think he only does them out of obligation.
I think Michelle is exactly right in explaining how Rob has approached the Saga. Don’t bother trying to sugar coat it. He and Kristen have both explicitly stated in interviews of the past that they don’t care for Twilight that much and that they don’t see what the big deal is about the franchise. Don’t try to deny it or defend him; however, I can’t blame him for it because all everyone ever associates with him now is Twilight, and lets face it, Twilight isn’t taken seriously by anyone outside of the fan base. The movies haven’t exactly helped make that better unfortunately and have only made the series more of a joke by how poorly done they’ve been. And please for my sanity, don’t go all, “OMGZ! IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE MOVIES, THEN DON’T COME ON HERE!” or my favorite, “You are not a true fan if you don’t like the movies.” Spare my brain cells.
When they began the series it was “indie” raw, no great budget, just a bunch of people on a set making the best of things. Now it’s gotten to the point where EVERYTHING that they do is monitored, scrutinized, and fed to the sharks. They never explicitly say “I dislike Twilight” they pitter around it, but I do think a measure of resentment has been building. Negative reviews on their acting make it very difficult to get roles that they REALLY want. Kristen is getting a little more lucky in the draw because she’s already established in the community, but in the states all the CDs and Producers really have for Rob (without doing research) is Twilight and it’s the most high profile, which stats are based on. Productions want Box Office Gold, not Golden Boy for Fangirls. He’s so talented though that I think he’ll rise out of it, in any genre that he wants.
That was me agreeing btw. Just thought I’d add this bit in ;]
Really?I’ve never heard of Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart not liking Twilight. Can someone tell me where I can find the articles where they said that? I’m so curious. I want to see it with my own eyes.
I’ve never heard Kristen diss Twilight, but Rob definitely has. There’s a lot of articles with these quotes, so just google any part of them:
“…when I read [Twilight], it seemed like I was convinced [author] Stephenie [Meyers] was convinced she was [the book's lead character] Bella and it was like it was a book that wasn’t supposed to be published. It was like reading her sexual fantasy, especially when she said it was based on a dream and it was like, ‘Oh I’ve had this dream about this really sexy guy,’ and she just writes this book about it. Some things about [Pattinson's character] Edward are so specific, I was just convinced – I was like, ‘This woman is mad. She’s completely mad and she’s in love with her own fictional creation.’”-Robert Pattinson
“When you read the book,” says Pattinson, … “it’s like, ‘Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.’ I mean, every line is liked that. He’s the most ridiculous person who’s so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn’t do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that’s how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he’s a 108 year-old virgin so he’s obviously got some issues there.”-Robert Pattinson
Ok, you have to admit the second one was pretty funny.
I have to admit this, and I may be slaughtered for it. But Mr. Pattinson’s analysis of the books is incredibly similar to how I felt when reading it. And I have always been a fan of how he wanted to play Edward. Dark, self-loathing…. It would have been fantastic… But I must not dwell in the past.
Sometimes you need to take every opportunity in life you get. Robert pattinson just took his changes with Twilight and it ended up like a mayor movie. They didn’t expected it to be such a big deal, something I always thought was a bit strange because the books are really popular. So they could have known all the readers would try the movie. But I can understand that the fame is annoying, you can’t even go outside whitout the huge change someone will recognise you. I think it feels like you’re being hunted down all the time.
Also you can’t like every project you get in. At the moment that twilight was casting Robert was looking for work. He was on the edge off giving up acting and go back home. Just because he couldn’t get any work. And an actor whitout work isn’t an actor at all… So it makes sense that he took the part in Twilight, it was almost a leadrole. Even if he doesn’t like it a lot it was work and it probably was interesting enough for him. He must have thought he could do something with it otherwise he couldn’t have done such a great job at it. And I think Twilight is important for him because it brought him the change to get other roles. Even if twilight isn’t the type of story he really likes he liked it enough to do the best he could for the movies. It was life changing that ought to mean something.
A++ Absolutely agree
I’m sorry, but that is the dumbest picture I have ever seen. An alligator? Seriously? Pretty stupid if you ask me. Love the one of him at the piano though. I think it’s pretty bold of him to insult a series and a fan base that has given him such a launch into acting. It really pisses me off that he lumps the fans into a stereotype of just wanting to be part of a group. Maybe a lot of them are that way, but I’m not. I’m a fan because I love the books. Sorry Rob, but you just lost major points with me on this one. Not that he cares obviously. I think after he gets his paycheck from Breaking Dawn, he is going to run as far away from Twilight as possible. Sad that people take rolls that they don’t like or appreciate. I thought he was better than that.
I completely agree
I agree with you as well. I think as soon as he’s wrapped on this movie, the distancing will begin. I always wondered which of the actors would be the first to do that I just didn’t expect it to be Rob. I like his sense of humor but sometimes he comes across as snarky and snarky is not good. I really hope he is as good as he thinks he is or wants to be. Only time will tell I suppose. Will be skipping this issue.
(I am just commenting on everything lol) I think you’re right Elizabeth, he will be one of the first to distance. I admire him for that. Knowing that he wants to shed and evolve. Snary, or Smarmy as I like to call it. Can be good. Some of the best actors and actresses are smarmy. Dry and sarcastic as say, Sean Penn, Robert DeNiro, Anthony Hopkins. It can work, he’s still got to grow into that skin though.
*Snarky (pardon)
I think he meant he didn’t like the fame that was suddenly thrown on him, not twilight its self. If he didn’t like it he wouldn’t have taken the project.
What ever Rob may have ment in this interview there is no way of knowinf. For all we know VF could have mixed his words up and even if he didn’t it is his life. He has every right to like or dis like this movie or any movie that he dose. Just like many of us have sislike our jobs at on point or another.
I don’t think it make him mean or snarky to be honest about how he feels, in his line of work, he is going to get jobs that he is excited about and really want to do them and there will be other jobs were it doesn’t really do anything for him but he does it for the fans (and a paycheck) At the end of the day this is his way of making a living, making movies people don’t like, saying things in articals that people don’t like . Doing lots of things people won’t like.I Still love Rob as an actor weather he likes working on twilight or not ( he is going to get better gigs for it) as long as we are all still talking about him he is doing his job and thats making money.
Regardless what his feels maybe.
I agree with Talene.
Magazine interviews have been known to mixed words up or word things differently or take something out of context.
I stil like him. He’s just being honest. I’d rather he be honest than be fake and b.s about liking the series.
Honestly, we are no one to judge. I would have done the same thing if I was in his shoes. wouldn’t you ?
i really think he is talking about not liking the fame. He always does look uncomfortable when the paps are taking pictures of him.
P.S i thought this was a fansite
A fansite, fan site, or fanpage is a website created and maintained by a fan(s) or devotee(s) interested in a celebrity, thing, or a particular cultural phenomenon. The phenomenon can be a book, television show, movie, comic, band, sports team, game, or the like.

Well said. None of us really know what he meant and we never will unless we were talk to him ourselves. I don’t know why anyone expects him to be in love with Twilight. I don’t know about any of you, but I don’t personally know any straight guy that likes the books or movies. So even if Rob doesn’t like Twilight, that’s okay. He has to work just like the rest of us. I, for example, work at a gym. I hate working at a gym but I love the people so it’s okay with me. I think it’s probably the same for him. He’s said before that he wanted to do the movie because he thought Kristen was a great actress and then he ended up being in a relationship with her. That’s probably the part that makes doing Twilight okay with him and that’s fine. At least he’s honest instead of falsely gushing over something he doesn’t like, as others celebs do.
Oh My! (; Sexy Rob Alert! lol Can he get any more better ;D
Try working a job for 2-3 yrs and your job is to act moody, and brooding all the time. Your fans don’t greet you they chase you and some of his haters do the same. Robert is only being honest about the way he feels. If anything he is being true the character Edward Cullen ” tell the
Robert has-dedicated himself to the completion of Twilight series. He didn’t give on the fans let’s not give up on him because we don’t always agree or like his honesty.
I’m quite positive he meant in the interview that the Twilight Saga didn’t necessarily appeal to him (as in he wasn’t/isn’t a big fan of vampires) and that after he got the part of edward cullen and the craze for the movie grew it was just dumbfounding to him why people got so into the movies. I wouldn’t necessarily see it as him dissing the movies, I think he’s just working with something that he doesn’t see as being a big deal (a vampire movie). I think people also forget that he was basically a struggling actor prior to getting the role and after the movie came out he was suddenly thrust into the limelight, so he’s still trying to wrap his head around the whole “fame” portion of this.
We so appreciate your blog post. There are actually a multitude of tactics we could put it to very good use by using a minimum of effort on time and financial resources. Thank you really regarding helping make this post respond to many concerns we have come across before now.
