Ben Barnes Talks About Almost Getting Role of Edward Cullen

Speaking of playing vampires, “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke says you were one of the final four actors to be considered for the role of Edward Cullen. We all know that Robert Pattinson ended up getting the role, but what were your “Twilight” auditions like?
There were quite a few auditions. I was the first person they kind of approached about it. It was all right. I very quickly read the first ["Twilight"] book. I really enjoyed it. I think Kristen Stewart is great. I think she’s a really good actress. And I really like Catherine Hardwicke.
But then there were two things: First off, they didn’t want to mix “Narnia” and “Twilight.” I think it’s dangerous to mix characters from franchises while you’re doing one. So she definitely didn’t want Prince Caspian being Edward Cullen. It doesn’t make sense. And secondly, I’d still be shooting at age 30, playing 17, and nobody wants to see that. That would be kind of sad.And course you wouldn’t want the kind of craziness with fans and paparazzi that Robert Pattinson has to deal with in his life.

Rob wasn’t a super major character in Harry potter … Not like prince caspian so u can’t really compare the 2
Rob was not a major character in Harry Potter. Prince Caspian in Narnia is a major character that continues throughout the series.

Also if they turn the vampire academy books into a movie series ( which i heard they were ) that they cast him as dimitri

In the books I heart New york, I heart Hollywood and I heart Paris there is a guy , Alex and when they ever make a movie about these books , this guy is perfect for the role of Ales , really , he looks just like imagined him while i was reading ;D

do you remember all the hate robert pattinson had when he was first casted as edward cullen? trust me.. people love rob because he IS edward cullen, but they could have turned anyone with a decent set of cheek bones into the exact same heart throb
Yeah. like most ppl didnt no who he was but im a harry potter nerd so iv known who he was…. and i was so happy when he was casted as Edward! i new he was gunna be good. Hes always had this sexy look to him that just makes me melt. teeeheee!
Ben is gorgeous and would have made a great Edward. BUT I do agree with him that Prince Caspian could not be Edward too. I am going to see the new Narnia today. Rob P makes a perfect Edward Cullen. I think it had to be someone pretty unknown so he would not be associate primarily with another major character. This franchise has made RPat a huge star. I hope he can carry it on with other roles as he seems to be doing with the new movie with Reese Witherspoon coming out next year. I also saw Remember me and thought he did a fine acting job. He is getting better with each role and as Edward. Kristen has been doing movies since she was eleven or so when she did Panic Room and I have seen some of those Indie films she said no one ever saw. I saw them and she is a good actor too and is getting better. I want to see her doing different roles and not using the same gestures that she does. She is only 20 and is and will grow as an actor.
I understand his points about him not being able to have the role, but I feel as though he thinks he “should” have gotten the role as opposed to Robert. Like if he wasn’t playing Caspian and was younger, he would have definitely gotten the role of Edward. I don’t think that he’s able to say that, and I’m not sure if I think he would have been an appropriate Edward. I’ve seen some of the other guys who were close to getting the role, and I feel as though they possibly could have brought more to the character than he would have.
But that’s my opinion.

Rob Pattinson IS Edward Cullen.
Whether Ben Barnes could have portrayed it well or not… That’s a different story.
Rob touched our hearts with a different take on Edward in the beginning, and has now grown into his character.
I couldn’t imagine anyone else being Edward, especially Ben.
Imagine all the changes he would have had to go through!?
And, can you imagine… a 17 year old, at the time Kristen, making out with a 30 year old Ben Barnes?

Yeah, well, Stephenie Meyer wanted, or at least thought the perfect Edward would’ve been Henry Cavill but they said that he was to old to look like a 17-year old and at the time he was Rob’s age now, 24. To have Ben Barnes when they were casting back in 2007, Barnes would’ve been 27 years old. Even though he looks really young, to put Barnes’ 27 to play with Kristen Stewart then 17-year old, would’ve been a bit awkward.
You would have all been all over Ben if he played Edward. You wouldn’t even know who Rob was so whats the point in this?
Robert is our Edward now. No one else could even take his place. Just feels weird to even think about it….

Well I do NOT like Mr Pattinson. I had expected a lot more from Edward since he was nothing but an absolutely perfect guy in the book, and frankly it took 1 billion years for Robert to look as magnificent as how Edward was described by Stephanie. But since Twilight then New Moon then Eclipse were released, honestly the Edward version Rob played marked so deeply in my head that I could hardly think of any other male actors who are capable of reflecting this vampire character.

It was so right that Rob got the role of Edward, and Ben got Prince Caspian. It would be really awkward to see Ben flirting with Kristen or how Rob may ride horse, swing swords and blow a horn

Don’t hate, but Ben would’ve made a HOT Edward in my mind. He’s a better actor than Robert anyway.
