Vampires Beat Wizards in Twilight v.s. Harry Potter Midnight Showings

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner still retain their throne as the most popular trio of celebrities to pull in box office numbers over Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. After this weekends release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows the box office numbers for the midnight show, Twilight Eclipse retains first place, Twilight: New Moon second place and the new Harry Potter film coming in third. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows raked in 24 million, Twilight: New Moon 26.3 million and Twilight Eclipse 30 million for their midnight showings.

They may have brought in more crazed fan girls, but at least HP fans have some self-respect. Bella, Edward, & Jacob don’t even touch Harry, Ron, & Hermione when it comes to depth. They don’t even come close. It makes sense that Ron & Hermione love each other. Bella & Edward are just obsessed with each other. That’s not love. They have no personalities. Being nice & perfect are not personality traits. That’s just wrapping paper on an empty box. Plus, HP will continue to be read a 100+ years down the rode. Twilight is just a phase, a sexual fantasy published by a middle aged woman who wanted to write about a teenagers lack of feminism.
ohhh Dang, RUDEEEEE!
Ahh!!!! I totally agree with you Jessica. Twilight is sooo poorly written, and it definitely translates onto screen as well. The characters in Harry Potter have so much more depth than those in Twilight. Despite having beat Harry Potter at the box office, Twilight can’t hold up compared to the excellence of the Harry Potter books. Stephen King said it himself, “Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that [Harry Potter author] Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and [Twilight author] Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”
if there so poorly writen why do people like them so much and comments on have beautifully writen they are? hhuummmm.
i like how HP fans come on a twilight site to say horible things about the books.. really ppl?? – you have nothing better else too do??
I like Hp & Twilight, their two very diff stories – i dont see why were tying to compair them – Hp fans need to get over themselves – yes you more popular you have a damn theme park – so relax, breath – just b/c we made a little more money in a movie doesnt mean u have to start talking smack on Twilight sites
Maybe we actually like Twilight, too. It’s just… Compared to Harry Potter Twilight is just stupid girlygirl rubbish. Rather total rubbish even. The Characters do NOT have any depth. Well Jacob does somehow… and maybe Rosalie, but Bella? Seriously? No. Can’t compete with Harry Potter AT ALL. And I don’t start on that usually. I don’t compare those two unless someone says Twilight beats Harry Potter just because there are more crazed fangirls out there.
Plus: Like I said, I like Twilight. I love the way SM writes and though I think The Host ist way better than all the Twilight books together, I still enjoyed the saga. Just… Compared to HP: RUBBISH!
While I agree that the HP characters have much more depth than the Twilight characters, Edward and Bella do have more to their personalities than being “nice and perfect.” (And “nice” IS a personality trait, by the way.)
And I argue that both books will be read years down the road. While HP is much deeper and complex, Twilight also touches something deep inside people, and I can see it lasting for years.
Bella does not have a lack of feminism. She pushes Edward to have sex, and she pushes for it until she gets her way. She pushes to become a vampire. She refuses to give up her child. She fights to be allowed to help with the fight in Eclipse. There are numerous instances in the book of her refusing to submit to male characters. Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not at all a fan of Bella. She has no shortage of bad qualities – whininess, self-centeredness, ungraciousness – but being anti-feminist is not one of them.
Oh, and attacking SM by denouncing her as middle aged is a logical fallacy known as ad hominem. SM’s age has no bearing on the quality of her work, for better or for worse. You’re trying to distract us from the work itself by insulting the creator of the work. Not working.
You must be the ignorant one, since you don’t have the capacity to look at the the saga with depth and perception. Bella and Edward don’t just “love” each other, Edward doesn’t even like Bella at first…
The mystery that they both elude towards each other captures them. His inability to read her mind and the puzzling complexity of why that is, perplexes Edward.Equally, Bella is captivated by the mystery of who Edward is and why there is so much ominous obscurity that shrouds him. Twilight is a story of true love prevailing. It wasn’t written as great as it could have, I’ll give you that, but it is a great unique story. There is much more to Edward than perfection, that’s just Bella’s view point of him because it is written in HER perspective, the perspective of a love struck person. They are also both mature beyond their years, I could go own but I won’t. If it really were that bad it wouldn’t have surpassed HP in the box office. SUCK IT.
UNIQUE????? allright. NOT.
Yeq well consider the fact that HP came out on a school night and eclipse came out over the summer. That plays in a lot. And deathly hallows is in the top 5 for biggest opening weekend AND it’s one of the greatest franchises in history. So YOU can suck it.
Nice one, paulina!
If it’s a just a phase, then why has Dracula and vampires been popular in American culture since 1897?
It’s not a phase, just keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. Twilight apparently runs deeper in its fans and that’s why we always pone HP in the midnight ratings. Twilight is loved all over the world, by people of so many different ages and cultures. You can’t even walk into a store, watch tv, or go on the internet nowaways without being smacked in the face with Twilight news or merchandise.
Saying that it won’t be read years down the road is just plain idiotic on your part.
Oh, btw, Ron and Hermione loving each other makes less sense to me that Bella and Edward together. Have you even read the books?!
Twilight is more popular than harry potter in midnight for one simple reason: Fan service. Daniel Radcliffe is, admittedly, for all his charm and funny personality, not nearly as good looking as either robert pattison or taylor lautner.
Haha. Very true!
None of that really makes that much sense. Also, Ron and Hermione being in love makes perfect sense. It is foreshadowed throughout the whole series. And yes, I have read the series, seven times to be exact. The only reason why Twilight “pwned” Harry Potter was that it came out in the summer, while Harry Potter came out on a school night. Oh and by the way, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows made $125.1 million dollars during the whole opening weeked, which was way more than Twilight.
I know it seems like I’m not a Twilight fan, but that’s not the case. I actually love Twilight. However, I think it’s ignorant when people try to say that Twilight is better than Harry Potter. It may have more rabid fans right now, but Harry Potter IS written better and the movie scripts are generally better as well, although I blame Melissa Rosenberg for screwing up the Twilight Saga movies.
Um, excuse me? Did I ever say Twilight was better than Harry Potter? No, I did not. I never argue over that, cause it’s all a matter of opinion. And the two are completely different books/movies that can’t accurately be compared. It seems like only HP fans like to argue over which one is better. You grab at anything to argue about. I’m just stating that Twilight is NOT a phase.
And get your facts straight…New Moon came out in November last year, just like the latest Harry Potter and it STILL beat HP in the midnight ratings. Eclipse is 1st, New Moon is in 2nd, and HP is 3rd. Google it!
And I was actually addressing my response to Jessica, not you, Alyssa. Get off the site if you love HP so much. This is a TWILIGHT fansite, not a “lets argue about Harry Potter” site. I NEVER post trash about HP…EVER! You HP fans always make everything a debate.
I WASN’T talking about the midnight showings. I specifically said the WHOLE weekend ticket sales for HP was MORE than Eclipse, you may Google that if you want. SO, while Eclipse did make more opening night, it did NOT make more opening WEEKEND, which you would have seen if you would have read what I said. And I can be here if I want because as I ALSO stated, I like Twilight, there’s nothing wrong with it. I was actually pretty obsessed with it in the beginning, I’ve read every book about 6 six and I check this site everyday. I wasn’t arguing which series was better in terms of opinion, that would be beyond pointless. What I SAID, if you would’ve read more thoroughly, was that HP is WRITTEN better, in a purely literary sense. There IS NO ARGUMENT on that, because that is just plain English at it’s best. Ask any Lit professor. I would NEVER argue that HP is just plain better because, as you said, they are two totally different series. If you weren’t so quick to jump on what I said and actually READ it first, you would know that.
@Alyssa:
Yeah, I READ your post. I don’t have to “read more thoroughly,” thank you. I got what you said, I might have just ignored it because it’s irrelevant and I don’t care to argue over everything you HP fans bring up. I was just talking about the midnight ratings and that Twilight is not a phase. That’s all I was talking about. Not which series was written better or which made more money. You just brought in the weekend ratings to try and make it seem like HP is better. We’re not discussing weekend ratings, we’re only discussing MIDNIGHT RATINGS!
Uh, if you’re not talking about what I am talking about, then BUD OUT of my posts then! Quit replying to my responses with your opinions on things I’m not even talking about.
Like I said, you guys grab at anything to argue about.
have YOU even read the series? ron and hermione loving each other makes perfect sense if you look at their character development throught the series!
on and twilight runs deeper in its fans? you’re kidding right?
twilight is full of TEENAGE GIRL fans who do nothing but scream at the movie and annoy people (like me) who actually want to hear what is happening. (really..find me more than..idk..20 male twilight fans in your school and i’ll give you props) and teenage girls are, admittedly, more willing to do the crazy unrational things for the object of their fanatics.
harry potter has fans of ALL ages and is the story of a whole generation who are respectable and care so much about the story that none of us scream during the movie because we want to hear whats happening. all of us.
no, twilight doesnt obviously run deeper in its fan base. just go to an hp midnight showing and you will see the unbelievable dedication of our fans. everyone dresses up. people duel in front of the theater. we talk excitedly for FIVE HOURS of waiting at the theater of nothing but all there is to HP.
i love both series, but saying that HP doesnt have a deep fan base is deeply offending.
I pretty much agree with you. I mean, I actually like Twilight. However, I do agree that Harry Potter is written much better. No one can actually deny that. Ask anyone who is an English teacher or a writer or has any other job relating to English, Stephenie Meyer’s writing is simple. Not that it’s a bad thing, because I like an easy read sometimes, but it’s true. Anyway, I think the only reason why Harry Potter didn’t make as much money during the midnight release is because this time it was released on a school night, so many younger kids probably couldn’t go out to see it. I did go to the midnight release in my city and we sold out a total of 43 theaters.
By the way, does anyone know the TOTAL weekend sales, because this is only for the midnight release.
I couldn’t agree more jessica! Twilight is just some book about a girl obssessed with his boyfriend, a vampire that sparkles and a child which grows old faster. LOL No depth at all. HP is about friendship, family, bravery, love, good winning over evil. Harry Potter has its generation. And will always live on the hearts of the people. Twilight is for teenagers, HP is for EVERYONE.
jassica there movies!!!!! all i hear from u is blah blah blah blah!!! hahahah (but twlight does rule)
*they’re. Use proper spelling hun
I love them both so do a lot of my friends, even my fiance likes both and goes go all the midnight showings with me
. I think its ztupid to compare them. They are two completely different stories, you can’t please anyone.
To* and *stupid.
Silly droid.
I don’t understand the competition between the two franchises. They’re more different than alike. The rivalry is LAME. They’re both awesome. Who cares what the media says?
Just take it for what it is. And if you’re not a fan of the series please get some self respect and leave.
Bravo!!
Well it probably helped that Eclipse’s premier was in the summer time. Meaning more people could afford to go to a weekday midnight showing then. I remember one of my roommates and her boyfriend going to harry potter midnight showing. I really wanted to go but unfortunately had a test in the morning on that Friday. But yeah like Brittany said. I don’t like this unnecessary competition between the two.
New Moon came out the same time last year as HP7 Part 1 did this year. New Moon earned $26.3 million in midnight showings, compared to HP7 Part 1′s $24 million.
Yes, HENCE why I said ECLIPSE and NOT New Moon in my comment. Dur
Dur? Wow, seriously? Inmature much?
Lauren is saying that it doesn’t matter the time of season. Twilight still does better in midnight ratings. I’m SURE if Eclipse came out in November just like New Moon did and the latest HP, the results still would have been the same.
Yeah, “dur” you read it right. Now get over it. I know what Lauren is saying, and I am telling LAUREN, not you that I did not mention New Moon. I was talking about Eclipse within itself. The gap between new moon and HP7′s midnight releases was far less than eclipse and HP7′s release. So I’m saying there definitely IS a correlation between time of year and people’s ability to go to midnight showings.
Wow, MR is a BITCH! Grow up!
Twilight still beats HP in the midnight ratings! “Now get over it.”
I wish Kimmy hadn’t posted this. Yes, I am happy that Eclipse “won” (even though I prefer HP, having Eclipse be the winner makes me feel not quite so bad for liking Twilight in a world where Twilight bashing is very much in vogue).
However, we need to stop fueling the rivalry between the two franchises. As I have mentioned before, I believe that most of the animosity comes from the HP side of things. Let’s not sink to their level, OK? (Let’s face it, Twilight fans have a bad rep for a reason. We need to act mature and level-headed every opportunity we get to offset our reputation.) Let’s just enjoy whichever franchise we like (which for many of us will be both of them, since there is so much fan crossover) without being at each other’s throats about which one is better.
Now, normally I wouldn’t have a problem with HGE posting this article. By itself, it isn’t offensive. But it comes so soon after the post about the HP vs. Twilight debate that I’m really hoping there’s not a pattern forming here.
Omg we’re still #1????!!! I’m too happy right now. I mean, I’m sure that overall, HP6 part 1 will make more money than Eclipse did (even NM mad more money than Eclipse) but it’s nice still having bragging rights to midnight showings. I’m sure it’s bc of all the TwiMoms dishing out their hard earned money to the cause. Lol
WE? You don’t have anything… O.o The actors have somthing, the producer, the director, SM even the camera crew, but YOU? Sorry to say so, but you’re not No. 1
i honestly do not know why they compare these two series all of the time. Yes they both make big money and both have a large fan-base (not to mention they are both amazing books as well as movies) THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! One is a romance and the other is action/adventure. Why compare them? it’s ridiculous when someone says “Twilight is better than HP” or “HP is better than Twilight” Both series are not even in the same category! If you are looking for a Romance/Fanasty series thats amazing; read Twilight. If you would rather read an adventure/action, turn towards HP. there, problem sovled. sheesh.
I totally agree! I don’t get why they keep comparing them … I also don’t get why the fans from one serie are bashing on the other fans!
I like Twilight and HP equally! I can’t tell what I believe is best, because I CAN’T COMPARE AN APLLE AND AN ORANGE
So … fans from Twilight, fans from HP … stop ‘hating’ each other … just try to co-exist
Harry Potter is more Fantasy than Twilight is, but apart from that, I do agree.
In my town they didn’t even have a midnight showing for Harry Potter, but they did for both Twilight movies, so that might have something to do with it as well.
WHERE THE HELL do you live? xD
Here in Germany, we don’t have this midnight showings, but we’ve got showings the day before the movie comes out. And that’s in like EVERY cinema. And not just one. We went to a cinema where there were 8 rooms all showing Harry Potter.
They didn’t do that for any of the Twilight movies, but for the last 3 HP movies.
Lol I live in Canada, but my theatre sucks and only has 8 rooms:P the only show we’ve ever had a midnight showing of was the last two Twilight movies:P
Lets wait to see what the BD numbers are! i bet they’ll be a lot bigger than those
ok stop with the bashing seriosly! twilight beat it and thiers not much you can do if ur not haooy about it. also people here like twilight and respect it so if ur not happy and ur gonna go bash it then go on other website not here. i agree with carrie thier TOTALY different from each other and you shouddnt compare whats better! so seriosly stop! its getting really anoying..i personally myself do not like harry potter but ive never acualy bashed it and said omg twilight is so better hp is wrtiitn sooo poorly! so there!
It’s just… Saying “Vampires beat Wizards” is ridiculous! That’s not what happened. It they called it “Wizards couldn’t beat Vampires”: Fine. I do agree. But to put it that way… That’s like saying: HAHA we’re still No. 1 you JERKS!
yea i guese your right i have nothing against that…its just about the people that are saying how it couldnt have beat hp cuz its ” sooo much better” and “twilight is written terribly” what u said is a wayy better way of putting it then how other people are just bashing it
They just bring up their “it’s terribly written” argument all time because they have nothing else to say. They have no point.
Yeah, I guess they kindof have a point. It’s not the writing, I didn’t like about Twilight. I love her writing, it’s totally catching, but it’s the storyline and the characters. To be honest that wasn’t very original. It wasn’t original at all. Plus it’s a very simple story, with very few twists or problems. For me shefocused too much on the love between Edward and Bella and too less on the story itself. It was entertaining though and I really do like the books (well except for The short second life of Bree Tanner” that one was just mones making…), it’s just that I DO see their point. Twilight is definetly not thought through enough, it’s her first book, she says so herself!
I think the only reason why Eclipse had a higher midnight showing box office is because it came out during the summer. Nevertheless, I find this interesting.
New Moon came out the same time last year as HP7 Part 1 did this year and it still made more money at the box office at midnight (over $2 million more), so the time of the year alone is not responsible for Twilight’s success.
I love both, so I would be happy for either
*Just more for Twilight lol ; ) *
I already read about Twilight beating Harry Potter in midnight ratings a few days ago on yahoo.
Here’s something new that hasn’t been posted here on HGE yet:
Ashley Greene will be on Lopez Tonight, tonight (Tue 11/23) at 12am ET/PT, only on TBS.
Just wanted to let you guys know!
harry potter sucks the acting sucks especially the plot sucks everything about it sucks. GO TWILIGHT!!!! <3
Really, are you five?
Yea, Harry Potter must have really bad acting considering that it has had almost every major and noteworthy british actor in the industry ::rolls eyes::
as much as I like twilight, it really doesn’t have a plot other than a high school girl having to choose between two guys while a group of crazy vampires is trying to kill her off JUST because she knows of their existence….
Why is it that usually Harry Potter fans are so aggressive about hating Twilight and being the “better” series?
I believe both series are wonderful and incomparable.
No one should say one is superior to the other, it goes by taste.
Personally, I find Vampires more fascinating than Wizards but that doesn’t mean Vampires are any better.
Harry Potter has been around forever, and fans are scared of Twilight taking it’s glory. Which isn’t going to happen since Harry Potter is the series of the generation. Anyways, this Harry Potter vs. Twilight feud is ridiculous.
I think it’s because you’ll get he occasional twilight fan like TWILIGHTFOREVER, who bashes harry potter with complete utter rubbish. Just read his comment, it reeks of BS.
the*
The reason why, for me at least, harry potter is just an overall better series is not just because it is written better, which is besides the point, it is also because it relies on deeper emotions than just romance. Twilight is one big romance franchise, while harry potter goes beyond it’s fantasy genre, and explores romance, and tragedy-it is relatable to everyone. Harry’s emotional journey is much more powerful than bella’s, he loses people, he gets what he wants, but loses a lot along the way. He begins the series as a scared little boy, and ends the series as brave man. Bella loses nothing, except her mortality. She gains everything and loses nothing. Bella begins and ends the series as the same person, with the exception that she becomes a vampire.Harry suffers realistically. Bella suffers superficially. Her character is what ruins the series for me. If the protagonist had been jacob who has real woes, and is a character with more depth, then i would’ve liked the twilight saga. But it isn’t. It’s about a whiny teenage girl who her whole life revolves around her equally dry vampire boyfriend, who by the second book is only interesting because of his obsessive love for his equally obsessive girlfriend. Furthermore, for me at least, Bella stops being relatable the moment that she chooses edward over her family, her friends. It seems terribly selfish.
There. All y’all have to admit it’s a good argument. These are mostly my opinions.
That was a very good argument. You make some valid points, some of which I agree with. Especially the points about Bella. In some ways, I think she’s okay but she’s so ridiculously selfish. It drove me crazy at times. When I read Eclipse, I seriously wanted to punch fictional Bella in the face! It was like she had two boyfriends and that’s just wrong. I think she sort of redeems herself in Breaking Dawn since she’s basically okay with dying just so her daughter could live. But anyway, I’m just glad that you seem to know how to argue without being crazy!
There’s no need to make an argument out of this. It’s all a matter of personal preference wether you think HP is better or twilight is better. Just because someone doesn’t agree with your preference doesn’t mean their wrong. I am a fan of both series, and I like them for completely different reasons, as does everyone else since they are completely different stories. So twilight holds the number 1 and 2 spots for midnight opening, that’s great. That means that there are obviously more twilight fans out there who are willing to go to a midnight showing then there are HP fans. That doesn’t mean that one is better than the other. If we decide on which series is better based on how much money they have made, then HP wins hands down. If we base it on how die hard the fans are, then twilight will win.
So in conclusion, HP fans (I am included in this), let the Twilight fans have their midnight showing record, they earned it. If it makes you feel any better you can always think about the fact that HP is the highest grossing movies series of all time. Lets just all be grateful that the books we love are even being made into movies.
right. argumentum ad hominem, as said somewhere above.attacking the individuals goes beyond the point of the whole argument. not just on Ms Meyer but also to the actors in it (that includes the “actresses; jeez the human language XD).
i love twilight. and for me, these are figures. more than what or how much a film grosses, the impact of the art is what matters to EVERY INDIVIDUAL. what may be true for me would not be the same case for others, like (sorry to veer away) REMEMBER ME. statistics say that it didn’t made that much but it IS one hell of a good movie.
no matter how many posts any fan would put on sites or suppose, one cannot make the other believe if s/he does not have any inclination to do so. however, human nature does not allow one to be trampled over.
peace. one word. one world.
I love both series. Twilight led me to read HP and I have to admit I ended up with the best books. HP is miles above twilight. Separately they are great. But if one is to dissect them apart and compare them, then Twilight barely makes reaches the bar of HP.
One thing is for sure … HP movies and definitely the books ALWAYS make me cry. I’ve yet to see twilight illicit the SAMs emotion in me.
I really don’t understand why Twilight and Harry Potter need to be constantly compared. I am a huge fan of both, and understand that the everything about the story is completely unique from the other, so there’s no sense in there being a competition. Both have their ups and both have their downs. So let’s just be nice and let everyone like what they want to like.
OMG i wonder why? perhaps because eclipse came out in the summer and HP7 came out in the school year?
because, face it, harry potter is soo much better than twilight.
its better written, its characters have actual depth, and the plot line is more than just a love story.
i mean, dont get me wrong, im a really big twilight fan. but im a bigger harry potter fan and im smart enough to realize that harry potter is of MUCH better quality.
just sayin.
I find it funny how the majority of Twilight fans I have seen generally don’t bother typing properly or using proper grammar, also, most people give no real reason as to why Twilight is better than Harry Potter, all I see is Edward, and “I can relate to a girl who is in love with a vampire” It seems quite ridiculous to me to be honest.
The Twilight Movies are only successful financially speaking, critics have given the movies negative reviews. Bella is a girl who seems to have a completely expressionless face and seems attached to Edward the moment she see’s him, that’s not true love. That’s lust. The series also encourages things that are completely stupid. Trying to drown yourself to see someone who dumped you is called being mentally unstable
Harry Potter has just given me a huge action packed ride from the first book to the last, I enjoyed the characters, the sub-plots, and the fact that the books were wholesome and expressed moral values that anyone can appreciate, Love, Honesty, Betrayal, Death, Misery, these are the things people go through in real life, throughout their WHOLE LIFE.
Even if someone could relate to Bella, they would mature and wouldn’t be able to, no 40-year old woman is going to go tree jumping with a vampire anytime soon.
BTW, I’m not biased in anyway, and I’m not making ignorant comments, I have read the Twilight Books, and watched all the movies.
I say Twilight all de way x
