Hitfix: Kristen Stewart a Contender for Oscars 2011?

Kristen Stewart, “Welcome to the Rileys”

Pro: She gives a strong and sympathetic performance as a young hooker who agrees to try and turn her life around under the guidance of a visiting salesman (James Gandolfini). She also gave a pretty great turn as Joan Jett in “The Runaways” earlier this year and has an impressive resume that has built up goodwill with roles in “Into the Wild,” “The Yellow Handkerchief” and “Adventureland.”

Con: The problem is the movie’s distributor may not send out screeners (a big need for this one) and there’s that “Twilight Saga” elephant in the room. She might need that series to be over before she’s taken seriously again by the industry.

That’d be SO amazing if Kristen won an oscar!
And, I agree and disagree with the Twilight elephant.
We all love Twilight here, but we all have to agree it is a “teen” sensation, and would certainly be laughed at if it was nominated for an oscar. I think the oscar NAME would be considered laughable if THAT ever happened.
However, what put all of Kristen’s films on the big screen? Twilight.
Welcome to the Rileys, and the Yellow Handkerchief would have never made it to the big screen if it wasn’t for her fame due to Twilight.
Not saying that they weren’t great movies (I can’t WAIT to see Rileys!), but the distributors aren’t well known and these are indie films, which aren’t well advertised. Twilight got these films to the big screen, sooo… I don’t think Twilight should be an elephant when it’s the reason these films got seen by people at all.
But, on another note, how AMAZING would that be if Kristen won an oscar!?
    Lets hope :) .

that so cool! i dont like the co saying that twilight is pulling her back from getting an oscar. twilight IS THE REASON WHY THESES FILMS ARE NOW BEING PROMOTED! its stupid how narrow minded people get about that. just because twilight isnt oscar worthy it doesn’t mean its not important.

    • Mason says:

But Twilight IS pulling her back from an Oscar. The truth is, the series is mediocre. I mean, I’m a fan and all, but let’s be serious here. Stephenie Meyer is a horrible writer and the series itself is poorly plotted. Twilight is the reason these films AREN’T being promoted! Do you see trailers for these indie films in mainstream cinema? No.

I agree with your last statement though.

      • Rukmini says:

Mason I completely agree with you. As much as I love all of Kristen’s work, I don’t think she can actually shine in her other work until Twilight is over. Hopefully after Breaking Dawn she will deliver more great performances that we all know she can. Not at the moment, but someday she should get an oscar if she keeps up her great acting and chooses her next films wisely.

I think it would be awesome if she got an oscar, because she truly deserves it! I think she works really hard to break away from twilight, but i think she’s still grateful for it, and it shows
if she gets one, i think she would be more appreciated.

by the way is it just me or is everyone but taylor laughtner really trying to break away from the franchise? i mean look at kstew and rob patz. they’ve both done like 10 movies each since twilight was first announced. and taylor i think has only done two.

i don’t mean to hate on him, but i wonder if he truly enjoys twilight and wants to enjoy it while he can because i’m sure there are plently of people wanting him for movies and such

  4. Cat says:

That sucks, Anna Kendrick was in all three Twilight movies and was nominated for an Oscar, so Kristen should be allowed. It should be judged on her performance, not on what other roles in her career have been like.

  5. Diane says:

It would be really cool if she wins a Oscar because she has grown up as an actress a lot. I really liked her acting as Joan Jett on the Runaways.

    • Joanna says:

Yeah, her rendition of Joan was great; it was very true to how Joan really is — badass. That, however, does not mean that she is a talented actress. One of my friends looks and acts (personality wise) EXACTLY like Kristen, even when she’s acting (theatre) but that doesn’t mean that she’s a good actor (which she’s not). It just means that she’s good at impersonating people.

  6. Kayla says:

This made me chuckle. Kristen Stewart, no matter how beautiful she may be, is in no way or form Oscar worthy. She just CANNOT act! She’s horrible! All stuttering and awkwardness is just uncomfortable to look at. I do, however, admire her for trying to break away from the Bella Swan persona and try to become a serious actress. Twilight is the reason that she will never be taken seriously — point blank.
